What is an operating system?

What is an operating system?

Operating system is a program that acts as a medium between the hardware and the consumer of a computer. The primary goal of the operating system is to make the computer system convenient for use and its second goal is to keep the computer hardware running smoothly.
The operating system is a set of programs designed to manage a computer's resources and include starting a computer, managing programs, managing memory, and coordinating tasks between input and output devices. .

  • Operating System required / working

Operating System controls and operates the entire computer. The computer is managed by this. Operating System gives the user the ability to work on the computer easily. The relationship of operating system and computer can be understood through a flow chart.

Some of the major functions of the Operating System are below.

  • The Operating System makes it easy to use the computer properly.
  • The Operating System hides a lot of hardware information from the user, so the user is not confronted with a lot of information.
  • The Operating System provides the user with a simple medium so that they can operate on the computer easily
  • The Operating System acts as an intermediary between the user and the hardware so that the user can easily use the computer and its resources.
  • Managing the computer and its resources is an essential function of the Operating System.

Different Types of Operating System

The Operating System has always been with computers. As the computer developed, so did the Operating System itself. The Operating System is divided into several categories. However, we will know some of the major types of Operating System here.

  1.  Multi-user:- Operating System This operating system allows multiple users to work together. On this operating system, hundreds of users can do their work at a time.
  2. Single-user:- Operating System In contrast, the Single-user Operating System allows only one user to work at a time. Many users cannot work on this operating system at one time.
  3. Multitasking Operating:- System This Operating System allows the user to run several different programs simultaneously. On this operating system, you can also write e-mail at a time and also chat with your friends.
  4. Multi-Processing:- Operating System This Operating System allows a program to run on more than one CPU.
  5. Multi-Threading:- Operating System This Operating System allows different parts of a program to run simultaneously.
  6. Real Time Operating System:- The Real Time Operating System processes the Input given by the user immediately. The Windows Operating System is the best example of this.

Operating system is a very important program for computers. Without it, the computer is just a dead object, it is not wrong to say. Without an operating system, using a computer can prove to be a very difficult task. To understand the relationship of Operating System and Computer, you can understand the above diagram.

Operating System Features

  • Tracks Primary Memory Like, where is it being used? How much memory is being used? And provides memory on demand.
  • It takes care of the processor, that is, manages.
  • Maintains all computers connected devices.
  • The computer manages both hardware and software.
  • Provides security through password and other technologies.
  • Keeps track of the work done by the computer and keeps a record of them.
  • Shows errors and dangers.
  • Creates coordination between User and Computer Programs.
